Escalating conflict in the Middle East is endangering global fertilizer shipments and putting the world’s food security at serious risk.

Fertiglobe CEO Ahmed El-Hoshy, whose company is one of the largest exporters of key nitrogen fertilizers, has issued a stark warning about the potential consequences for global agriculture.

The ongoing turmoil, particularly disruptions around critical shipping routes, threatens to drive up grain prices and worsen hunger, especially among vulnerable populations in poorer nations.

Fertiglobe, majority-owned by Abu Dhabi’s state energy giant ADNOC, relies on natural gas to produce urea and ammonia—essential inputs that help feed roughly half the world’s population by boosting crop yields.

Disruptions in the Persian Gulf have already caused fertilizer prices to surge dramatically, with some increases reported as high as 80 percent, reaching over $900 per ton in certain markets.

In an interview, El-Hoshy stressed the urgency of coordinated international action. “Global governments need to step up efforts to get fertilizer moving through the Persian Gulf and offer financial support for farmers to help offset the jump in prices,” he said.

The executive highlighted the vulnerability of the Strait of Hormuz, a chokepoint for much of the region’s energy and fertilizer exports. Prolonged interruptions could trigger broader supply chain shocks, leading to sustained higher food costs even after routes reopen. Fertiglobe has experienced short production outages but continues operations where possible, including from facilities in Algeria and Egypt.

El-Hoshy called for immediate support to farmers worldwide to maintain planting and production levels amid rising input costs. Failure to act, industry leaders warn, could exacerbate food insecurity at a time when global stocks are already under pressure from multiple geopolitical and economic factors.
