New dummy units give our closest look yet at the iPhone Fold – 9to5Mac

We don’t know yet whether Apple will call it the iPhone Fold, iPhone Ultra, or something else — but everyone expects the company to announce its first foldable phone later this year. Via Sonny Dickson, these dummy unit photos give us our closest look yet at what we expect the design to be.

The foldable iPhone will feature an approximately 7.8-inch screen when unfolded, giving an effective inner screen area similar to an iPad mini. As shown by these dummy mockup models, the front-facing camera will be positioned in the top-left corner of this screen.

Meanwhile, the outer display is about 5.5-inches in size. When closed, the Fold’s aspect ratio is slightly shorter and squatter than modern iPhones, almost like a passport-style form factor.

The inner camera is paired with two external-facing rear cameras. The device will not feature Face ID biometrics, instead offering Touch ID fingerprint recognition through the side button for device unlock and Apple Pay usage.

Interestingly, Dickson believes Apple may not offer multiple colors of the Fold. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman previously indicated that Apple would offer the foldable iPhone in black and white, but Dickson suggests that white may be the only option.

For new products, it is true that Apple tends to launch with a more limited set of color options, and gradually add more over time. The original iPhone and iPad had no color choices, for instance. Customers had to wait until the second generation models, the iPhone 3G and iPad 2, to have a choice of black or white.

In 2017, the revamped iPhone X generation was launched with just two color choices; silver or space gray. And the redesigned chassis of iPhone 17 Pro is offered in just three colorways, down from four from the prior year.

In general, the rumor mill expects the big differentiator for Apple’s foldable will be the quality of the build, specifically the hinge, with many reports suggesting that the foldable iPhone’s crease will be nearly invisible.

Additionally, we expect that Apple will be able to capitalize on the vibrant iPad tablet app ecosystem, to give the iPhone Fold a strong lineup of software from launch day. iOS 27, set to be officially unveiled tomorrow, may give us some hints about Apple’s plans for the foldable’s software experience.
