One police officer is dead and another officer is injured after a suspect opened fire inside a Chicago hospital.

On Saturday morning, a black male suspect opened fire inside Endeavor Health Swedish Hospital in Chicago’s Ravenswood hospital.

“Two Chicago Police Officers are reported to have been shot by a suspect at Swedish Covenant Hospital located at 5145 N California. This occurred around 1045am. Note: The suspect is still at large. Please pray for our police officers,” Chicago Alderman Jim Gardiner said in a post on Instagram.

The unidentified suspect was eventually taken into custody after a manhunt.

The motive for the shooting is not clear.

NBC Chicago reported:

A suspect is in custody after a shooting inside a Chicago hospital left one police officer dead and another critically injured on Saturday morning, law enforcement sources said.

Around 10:45 a.m., two Chicago police officers were shot at Endeavor Health Swedish Hospital, located at 5140 N. California Ave. in Chicago’s Ravenswood neighborhood.

Police took the suspect to the hospital to be checked out before going to jail for a separate offense before the shooting broke out, police sources told NBC Chicago.

One officer was later pronounced dead and the other was at a local hospital in critical condition, sources told NBC Chicago.

The suspect was taken into custody around noon after a manhunt, authorities said.

The suspect, described as a black male, was reportedly wearing ‘minimal clothing’ at the time of the shooting.

WGN reported that the suspect was either being transported to or transferred from the hospital.
