Apple’s flagship iPhone lineup could look fairly different than usual this fall, and new posts from Weibo leaker Fixed Focus Digital provide insight into the later launch timing and new cost-cutting measures for the base iPhone 18.
iPhone 18 manufacturing processes reportedly being downgraded to match iPhone 18e for simultaneous launch
There’s a growing consensus that Apple’s base model iPhone 18 will be absent from this fall’s flagship lineup.
It will be a significant and unusual omission, but reporting from numerous sources now supports the claim.
And the latest corroboration comes from leaker Fixed Focus Digital.
He writes in a new post on Weibo that iPhone 18 will be released simultaneously with iPhone 18e. The launch is expected in early 2027.
That leaves Apple’s fall 2026 lineup at:
- iPhone 18 Pro
- iPhone 18 Pro Max
- iPhone Ultra
- and possibly iPhone Air 2
But the leaker doesn’t just corroborate what’s been previously reported. He also makes new claims regarding cost-cutting measures Apple is implementing with the iPhone 18.
Across a pair of new posts, Fixed Focus Digital says that Apple plans to downgrade the manufacturing processes for iPhone 18 so that they align with iPhone 18e.
This is said to be a new cost-management strategy. But unfortunately, specific details on how iPhone 18’s manufacturing process will regress compared to iPhone 17 are unclear.

It makes sense that if iPhone 18 and iPhone 18e launch simultaneously, Apple might be able to benefit from using shared manufacturing tactics.
Both models are already expected to offer many of the same features. From an outward design standpoint, iPhone 17 and 17e differ slightly in size, but iPhone 18e might adopt the slightly larger 6.3-inch screen and Dynamic Island that iPhone 18 offers. Thus, on the outside both models could be mostly identical.
We’re still at least nine months out from iPhone 18’s rumored launch, so plenty can change between now and then. But perhaps more than ever, Apple’s ‘e’ model next year will be more closely aligned with the base option.
