“I can’t stop thinking about how grass lawns are racist and like, based in white supremacy.”
A woke TikTok user is facing widespread backlash online after posting a video arguing that maintaining a well-kept lawn is tied to racism.
The user, @softchaoschannel, shared a video on Monday on TikTok, saying, “I can’t stop thinking about how grass lawns are racist and like, based in white supremacy.”
“If that doesn’t make sense, that’s okay, I guess. It seems really obvious to me. It’s really upsetting – Bring back weeds, bring back clover yards,” she continued. “Can anything just be okay in its natural state, or do we just have to whitewash everything, make it a competition and use it as a sign of your worth as a human being in society? Like, can we just have weeds?”
The video quickly drew attention online, with many users responding with mockery.
“I’ve never heard my lawn say an unkind word about anyone,” one commentator joked. Another person posted on X, “This lady is just venting ’cause she got a letter from her HOA.”
“I can’t stop thinking about how people can think about some of the dumbest things ever,” another user wrote.
While the comments sparked ridicule, criticism of traditional lawns has appeared in some environmental discussions. According to a previous report from the Sierra Club, “On platforms like Twitter, TikTok, and Facebook, young people are sharing anti-lawn memes, on the grounds that lawns lack native biodiversity, demand excess amounts of water and toxic chemicals, and symbolize racial exclusion (many of the same neighborhood HOAs that established rules for lawns also barred selling homes to people of color).”
