Lone Republican in NC County Commissioner Race DROPS OUT After Shooting at His Home

You might remember the story of Aaron Marin — the only Republican who is running for the Mecklenburg County Board of Commissioners in North Carolina.

Last month, we brought you this report after Marin’s home was targeted in a drive-by shooting:

North Carolina Republican Candidate’s Home Targeted in Suspected Drive-By Sh**ting

Now, we have an unfortunate update.

Aaron Marin has just decided to drop out of the race.

This comes after police determined that the shooting at Marin’s home was targeted, and not just a random act.

Even though it’s been over a month since the attack on Marin’s house — while his wife and kids were home, by the way — police have still not arrested a single culprit.

Take a look:

🚨#BREAKING: The ONLY Republican running for Mecklenburg County (Charlotte NC) District 1 has just dropped out of the race…

…AFTER NOT A SINGLE PERSON WAS ARRESTED FOR FIRING SHOTS AT HIS HOME WHILE HIS WIFE AND KIDS WERE INSIDE!!!!!

Local police CONFIRMED the attack was targeted specifically at Aaron Marin.

Bullet holes can be seen in trees, cars, mailbox, and his kid’s basketball hoop. Marin’s ENTIRE FAMILY was forced to leave their home and Aaron says they live in, “constant fear.” He says his kids no longer even feel safe to play outside.

CAN ANYONE EXPLAIN WHY ZERO MAINSTREAM MEDIA OUTLET COVERING THIS??????!!!!!!

REPUBLICANS ARE LITERALLY BEING SHOT AT AND THERE IS SILENCE FROM THE MEDIA!!!!!!

WHERE IS THE OUTRAGE?!!!!!!

Marin says that he decided to drop out of the race in order to protect his family and called on the city to do better with regards to violent crime.

As a result of the attack, the Marin family will be moving out of their home and out of the district that Aaron was running to represent.

Per WCNC:

The shooting happened on Feb. 17. Detectives recovered multiple shell casings from the road outside the home and determined the attack was targeted, not a random act of violence. The Huntersville Police Department and the FBI have both been involved in the investigation. As of Marin’s statement, no arrest has been made.

Marin said the experience exposed what he called critical weaknesses in Huntersville’s surveillance infrastructure, noting that major streets and commercial areas either lack cameras or rely on equipment too low in quality to be useful in investigations.

“Even with federal involvement, these limitations create real obstacles,” Marin wrote.

He said the primary reason for his withdrawal is that his family can no longer live in District 1, making it impossible for him to properly represent its residents. Marin lost the District 1 race in 2024 to Democrat Elaine Powell and was the only Republican candidate in the 2026 contest.

Marin called on town leaders to invest in stronger surveillance systems and a more urgent response to violent crime.

“No family should have to live like this,” he wrote. “This is bigger than our family. This is about the safety of the entire Huntersville community.”

The Charlotte Observer shared more from Aaron Marin’s resignation statement:

Aaron Marin, Republican candidate for north Mecklenburg’s District 1, announced Wednesday he was dropping out of the race “as a direct result of this incident and the ongoing lack of resolution.”

In a statement, Marin said his family has “been forced to leave our home, change our routines, and live in constant fear.”

“Under different circumstances, I would have remained committed to this role, and I look forward to serving my community in the future. We are now living displaced, in fear, and under constant stress. Our children are carrying emotional trauma that continues to deepen with each passing day without answers or accountability,” he said.

The drive-by shooting happened in mid-February. Marin previously said he was inside his home with his wife and their two young sons when shots hit the residence. Huntersville Police previously said they believe the shooting was targeted because “the homeowner is a candidate in a local political race” and that the FBI was assisting with the investigation.

In his latest statement Wednesday, Marin said “there has still been no arrest, no resolution, and no clear timeline for accountability.”

“Through this process, we have uncovered serious concerns about public safety infrastructure in Huntersville. Major streets, commercial areas, and high-traffic zones lack adequate surveillance. In many cases, there are no cameras at all—or the cameras that do exist are too low in quality to be effective,” Marin said. “This is not a minor issue—it is a critical gap that directly impacts investigations and delays justice.”

It’s completely understandable why Aaron Marin decided to end his campaign.

But, it’s very sad that the only Republican running in this North Carolina district has just been forced out of the race because someone tried to literally kill him and his family — then, got away with it!

Even worse, the establishment media is absolutely silent on this.

Make no mistake: this is an act of political terrorism.

I imagine it would be a much bigger story if the roles were reversed and a Democrat candidate was forced to drop out because someone shot up their house!

These folks on X have some very good thoughts:

This is an act of terrorism. And it is going to effect the outcome of an election. This needs to be addressed immediately. I wonder if it is happening in other races and states too.

This will only incentivize others to do the same to conservatives. The FBI should have stepped in.

Are we entering Bleeding Kansas territory?
