Members of the Los Angeles-based queer band “Muna” discussed how the LGBTQ community needs to arm itself and improve its physical fitness to measure up against “straight white” people. The bandmates made the comments during a last month appearance on the “Straight Diva” podcast, where discussions were centered around what they described as anti-LGBTQ legislation being passed under the Trump administration.
Speaking to UK-based podcast host Su, bandmates Katie Gavin, Naomi McPherson, and Jo Maskin detailed how the LGBTQ community has begun taking up firearms training to deal “with all of the horrors of modern-day society.” Gavin, the lead singer, told the host, “In America, like the queers, we are learning how to use guns…just for like self-defense, really.”
The comments were made in the context of a hypothetical World War III. The British podcaster, who is also a member of the LGBTQ community, said the queer community in the UK is also taking similar measures to protect itself.
Guitarist Josette “Jo” Maskin spoke about the importance of the queer community increasing its physical fitness standards to ensure a fair fight against “straight whites.” She said, “That’s why there’s such a big push in, like I guess, the queer community specifically, but for people to start lifting weights. The straight whites are not going to co-opt being strong. We should all be strong. We’re not gonna be like tiny, anorexic. Like, we’re going to fight you.”
Bandmate Naomi McPherson, who identifies as “non-binary,” added in a joking manner, “We can’t be heorin chic out here.” The term “heroin chic” refers to the ultra-slim beauty standards of the 1990s.
The clip circulated on the conservative X account, Libs of TikTok, which sparked debate about a recent surge of mass shootings committed by the LGBTQ community, specifically among those who identify as transgender. “Gender ideology is a public safety threat,” Libs of TikTok wrote in the post, tagging the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).
The Straight Diva podcast, hosted by Su and Louis Blooey, markets itself as an “annoying pop culture” podcast that discusses “the absurdness (and beauty) of straight & queer lifestyles alike.”
