The advertisement, titled “Rich People Live Longer,” aimed at highlighting wealth inequality in the US healthcare system. The commercial, narrated by rapper Common, showed wealthy individuals receiving superior healthcare benefits, including preventative care and easier access to specialists, before asking viewers why they should not have the same advantages. The ad suggested Hims and Hers products as the solution, positioning the company as a way for everyday Americans to access care that would typically be reserved for the wealthy.
The ad aired as scrutiny continues to surround the company’s leadership and regulatory practices. Dudum has previously donated to Democrats, including Ilhan Omar, Rashida Tlaib, Joe Biden, Kamala Harris, and Cori Bush, according to the National Pulse.
Last year, Dudum drew backlash after writing that he was “eager” to hire anti-Israel student protesters, a comment that resulted in a single-day drop of nearly $210 million in the company’s stock value. In a since-deleted post referencing campus protests, Dudum wrote, “Moral courage > College degree.”
On Friday, US Department of Health and Human Services General Counsel Mike Stuart announced that Hims and Hers Health Inc. had been referred to the Department of Justice for investigation over potential violations of the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act. The referral follows scrutiny from federal regulators over the company’s weight-loss drug that is a copycat version of Wegovy. The FDA has warned companies against selling “illegal copycat drugs.” Following the warning, Hims and Hers announced it would halt the launch of the product.
“Since launching the compounded semaglutide pill on our platform, we’ve had constructive conversations with stakeholders across the industry,” the company said in a statement on Saturday. “As a result, we have decided to stop offering access to this treatment.”
