A deadly shooting rocked the campus of Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, on the afternoon of December 13, 2025, during what was supposed to be a routine period of final exam preparations.

The attack occurred inside the Barus & Holley building, which houses engineering and physics classrooms, and left two people dead and nine others injured. The incident sent shockwaves through the university community and prompted a massive law-enforcement response across the city.

Authorities say the shooting began shortly after 4:00 p.m. during a classroom review session. Multiple gunshots rang out, causing panic among students and faculty members who scrambled to escape or barricade themselves inside nearby rooms.

Campus alerts were quickly issued warning of an active shooter, and students were instructed to shelter in place as police worked to secure the area.

Providence police, Rhode Island State Police, and federal law enforcement agencies responded within minutes. Heavily armed officers flooded the campus while helicopters and K-9 units assisted in the search for the suspect.

The FBI and other federal partners joined the investigation as authorities worked to determine whether the shooter had fled the scene or remained nearby.

As the situation unfolded, officials released images of a person believed to be connected to the incident, showing a man dressed in dark clothing walking near the campus shortly after the shooting.

Late that night, law enforcement confirmed that a person of interest had been located and taken into custody at a hotel in Coventry, Rhode Island, several miles from Providence. Firearms were reportedly found in his possession at the time.

By early Sunday morning, officials announced that the shelter-in-place orders had been lifted and that the campus was no longer considered an active threat.

However, authorities later clarified that the individual taken into custody was a person of interest only and was not being charged in connection with the shooting. The individual was subsequently released as investigators continued to evaluate evidence and leads.

Of the nine people injured, several were transported to local hospitals for treatment. Officials described the conditions of the wounded as ranging from stable to serious but not life-threatening. While authorities have not released all victim identities, it was confirmed that most of those affected were students.

In response to the tragedy, Brown University canceled all remaining classes and exams for the semester. University leaders expressed deep sorrow and emphasized that counseling services and support resources would be made available to students, faculty, and staff impacted by the violence. Vigils and memorials began forming as the community sought comfort and solidarity in the wake of the loss.

Local and national leaders condemned the attack and offered condolences to the victims’ families. The shooting renewed concerns over gun violence on college campuses and intensified calls for improved safety measures and broader discussions about violence prevention in educational environments.

As the investigation continues, law enforcement officials say they are still working to determine the motive behind the attack and whether additional individuals may be connected. Increased police presence remains in parts of Providence as authorities continue to gather evidence and interview witnesses.
