“It is with profound sorrow that we announce the tragic passing of Michele and Rob Reiner.”
Movie director Rob Reiner, as well as his wife, were found stabbed to death in their Brentwood home in California, and authorities are looking into their son, Nick Reiner, as a person of interest in the killings, according to law enforcement.
Reiner, 78, the director of classics such as “The Princess Bride,” as well as his wife Michele, 68, were found dead on Sunday by their daughter. “It is with profound sorrow that we announce the tragic passing of Michele and Rob Reiner,” their family said in a statement. “We are heartbroken by this sudden loss, and we ask for privacy during this unbelievably difficult time.”
Their 32-year-old son, screenwriter Nick Reiner, has been identified as a person of interest in the case, law enforcement sources told the New York Post. A knife was used in the stabbing attack that killed the Reiners. The younger Reiner has previously spoken about his struggles with drug addiction as well as being homeless.
“I was homeless in Maine. I was homeless in New Jersey. I was homeless in Texas. I spent nights on the street. I spent weeks on the street. It was not fun,” he said in a 2016 interview. Officers were on the scene over the weekend. LAPD Detective Chief Alan Hamilton said in a press conference that those in the neighborhood were not in any danger, but that a suspect has not been found.
LA Mayor Karen Bass said of the killings, “This is a devastating loss for our city and our country. Rob Reiner’s contributions reverberate throughout American culture and society, and he has improved countless lives through his creative work and advocacy fighting for social and economic justice.”
“An acclaimed actor, director, producer, writer, and engaged political activist, he always used his gifts in service of others. Personally, I am heartbroken by the tragic loss of Rob and his wife Michele. I knew Rob and have tremendous respect for him,” she added.
Reiner was known for directing a number of classic 90s movies such as “The Princess Bride,” “When Harry Met Sally,” and “A Few Good Men.”
