Two gunmen opened fire at Bondi Beach in Sydney, Australia, during a Hanukkah festival known as “Chanukah by the Sea.”
The attack occurred around 6:40pm on Campbell Parade near Bondi Pavilion, targeting Jewish celebrants on the first day of Hanukkah.
Witnesses reported hearing over 30 gunshots as the gunmen emerged from a vehicle and fired rifles into the crowd.
One gunman, identified as 24-year-old Naveed Akram from Bonnyrigg, was shot by police and arrested while receiving treatment.
The second gunman was killed by police.
A homemade improvised explosive device was discovered near the scene and neutralized by the bomb squad.
Police are investigating possible involvement of a third person.
The death toll reached 12, including children, with 29 others injured, among them two police officers in critical condition.
Victims included Alex Kleytman, who died protecting his wife Larisa after 50 years of marriage.
Survivors described chaos, with people running into the ocean or hiding behind walls as shots rang out.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese condemned it as “an act of evil antisemitism, terrorism” targeting Jewish Australians.
NSW Premier Chris Minns called it a deliberate attack on the community.
