The suspect accused of targeting a crowd at Berlin’s pride festival reportedly had ties to the Islamic State terror organization and had been ordered by a court to attend a deradicalization program for people at risk from right-wing extremism and Islamism.
Police said Abdul Ballout, a 21-year-old German-born citizen with Lebanese roots, plowed his vehicle into attendees at the LGBT event on Saturday. Ballout also stabbed people with a machete, killing one person and injuring at least 29 others.
Ballout was shot and killed in a confrontation with officers on Sunday, ending a 24-hour manhunt.
