Dec. 15 (UPI) — A Maryland man did a favor for a relative and was rewarded with a scratch-off lottery ticket that turned out to be a $100,000 winner.

The Silver Spring man told Maryland Lottery officials he recently received a call from a relative he had been helping out.

“I was on the phone with him when he pulled into a gas station,” the man recalled. “He told me that, while he was there, he would buy me a scratch ticket as a ‘thank you’ for the help I’d been to him.”

The relative selected a $10 Double Your Money game from the Exxon station on Veirs Mill Road in Silver Spring. The man asked his relative to scratch the ticket for him while still on the phone, and he revealed what initially seemed to be a $100 prize.

“We were both happy, but then he told me to hang on, that he might have read it wrong, so my excitement faded a bit,” the player recalled.

It turned out the relative had missed three zeros: the ticket was a $100,000 winner.

“It was impossible to believe. I never win anything,” the winner said.
