Sharon Osbourne, the no-nonsense widow of Black Sabbath legend Ozzy Osbourne, has thrown down the gauntlet against a convicted terrorist eyeing a seat on Birmingham City Council in the UK’s second city.
Shahid Butt, a 60-year-old Muslim activist, was slapped with a five-year sentence by a Yemeni court in 1999 for plotting to bomb the British consulate in Aden, along with an Anglican church and a Swiss-owned hotel. Now, he’s gunning for the Sparkhill ward as part of the Independent Candidates Alliance, peddling a pro-Gaza agenda in a neighborhood where nearly two-thirds of residents hail from Pakistani heritage.
Butt’s dark past doesn’t end there. He did time in Birmingham prisons for violent offenses in his youth and has since positioned himself as an anti-extremism campaigner—while dismissing his Yemeni conviction as “fabricated,” with claims of torture-extracted confessions and planted evidence.
The Independent Candidates Alliance, founded by pro-Gaza activists Akhmed Yakoob and Shakeel Afsar—who flopped in the 2024 general election—now backs Butt’s bid.
Osbourne caught wind of this via an Instagram post from a political commentator slamming Butt’s candidacy and posted a pledge to counter him, writing “This has nothing to do with racism. I think I’m gonna move to Birmingham and put my name down for the ballot to be on the council. I’m serious.”
Social media erupted in support. One user cheered: “You’d have my vote if I were there. They are destroying Ozzy’s home, it’s disgraceful.”
Another urged: “Please!!! We will all support you! You are a brave woman! You got this, we got you!”

More piled on: “Please do, Sharon. Gosh, it’s just unbelievable that someone like him can stand. It’s just so demoralising. What is this country coming to?”
“Please, for the love of God, let’s get back to normality. We are living where the left or the right don’t represent the normal working class of this country,” another respondent urged.
Another suggested, “Any chance that you could just run for prime minister instead, I’m sure you would win no problem at all. We desperately need some strong leadership.”
Osbourne’s stand comes amid broader UK woes, like PM Keir Starmer celebrating the release of extremist Alaa Abd el-Fattah, who praised Osama bin Laden and called for violence against Jews.
Meanwhile, ordinary Brits face the full force of the law for far less. Take Lucy Connolly, who served time for a heated tweet about immigration after the Southport attacks and now faces re-imprisonment for sharing a satirical joke about Starmer.
As tensions rise with anti-Israel protests and alarms from Jewish communities, Butt’s bid reeks of sectarian politics gaining ground—thanks to policies that prioritize open borders over safety.
Osbourne’s potential run, tied to her late husband’s Birmingham roots could rally locals fed up with this slide.
This clash underscores the urgent need to slam the door on unchecked immigration and lax laws that let extremists waltz into power, threatening the very fabric of British freedom and security.
True freedom demands vigilance against those who plot against it—whether in Yemen or Birmingham.
