Pixel 10a vs. Pixel 10: A slim gap is now a chasm [Video] – 9to5Google

In years gone by, the A-series has encroached on the base Pixel, but that isn’t the case in 2026. How does the Pixel 10a stack up against the Pixel 10? Here’s everything you need to know.

Google has drawn a line in the sand between devices for the first time since the Pixel 6a dropped with the best Tensor chip of its day. This makes it easier to decipher, but throws up some questions that need to be answered as to what makes something “premium” versus “affordable.” Luckily, we have spent time with both handsets to help clear up any confusion.

Hardware and design

The Pixel 10 and Pixel 10a look similar but are very different in the hand. The Pixel 10 continues that premium “iPhone-lite” evolution we saw with the 9 series. We’re talking Gorilla Glass Victus 2, a polished back, and those satin aluminium frames that feel incredibly dense and high-end in the hand. It’s a “slab” in the best way possible – while being small enough for most people.

Conversely, the Pixel 10a continues the bump-free unibody design from the 9a that was so refreshing. It’s even flatter this time around as the camera is flush with the backplate. This is a subtle phone that still has an “everyman” look and begs to be used without a case. It does technically use cheaper materials, but the totally matte finish stands out.

There’s a significant difference in the weight of both phones, over 20g, which doesn’t seem significant but is noticeable. It’s super frustrating that Google didn’t add Pixelsnap to the Pixel 10a either; it’s one of the best additions to the Pixel 10 and something you’ll need to add with a case or extra accessory. This feels like it could have been an easy win, but alas, the A-series will have to wait. It’s also worth noting that the 10a is about a millimeter or so taller than the Pixel 10, too.

What’s interesting is that the Pixel 10a and Pixel 10 have almost identical screens with 3,000 nit peak brightness levels, 120Hz refresh rates, and Adaptive Tone functions, but we’re still using an optical fingerprint scanner on the 10a. It’s almost impossible to tell the screens apart, save for the bigger bezels on the Pixel 10a. What’s interesting is that the Pixel 10 can stay at peak brightness for a little longer, if that matters.

If you care about speaker quality, the Pixel 10 has much better quality audio thanks to deeper, fuller bass. That’s not to say the Pixel 10a speakers are bad; they’re fine in a pinch when watching videos or taking a call.

Performance and specifications

Day-to-day, you might not notice significant performance degradation, but, as noted, for the first time, there is a divergence in the specifications that makes the Pixel 10 an arguably better buy. The Tensor G4 processor is absolutely fine. It’s middling at best and will do all the basics without breaking a sweat.

The Tensor G5 chip isn’t all that much stronger than the G4, but it is stronger. It allows for better on-device AI processing, too, but the efficiency gains are where you might notice a difference. In theory, it shouldn’t suffer from lock-ups or other issues. The extra 4GB of RAM on the Pixel will help with the overall smoothness of the system and UI. For gaming and other intensive phone-based tasks, these are not particularly ideal.

If you go for the 256GB Pixel 10, you’ll also get faster storage. That said, the 128GB versions are identical, which is likely the model most people will pick up anyway. There is no gulf in performance, just a minor gap.

Whether due to chipset limitations, the Pixel 10a misses out on Pixel Screenshots, Magic Cue, but you can get Pixel Studio, Pixel Journal, and even functions like Satellite SOS on the 10a now. If you value those cutting-edge AI features, you’re only missing out on a few.

Camera

One of the great levellers between the Pixel 10a and the Pixel 10 is that the main and ultrawide rear camera lenses are identical. Zero differences. It’s only the addition of the 10.8-megapixel 5x optical zoom lens on the Pixel 10 that gives it the edge, as it’s backed by some AI enhancements and can zoom to 20x versus the limited 8x of the 10a.

The 10a also lacks the ultrawide selfie option, plus it has no autofocus for pets. Those are “nice to haves” rather than dealbreakers in our opinion.

In terms of camera quality, aside from the 10’s zoom, these cameras are identical. It is almost impossible to tell them apart when photos are side-by-side. Maybe photos from the 10a can be a little cooler, but it’s such a minimal difference that could be explained by the auto white balance settings.

Even the camera features are the same, including the AI-powered Camera Coach. Which you prefer ultimately boils down to how much you value a telephoto lens. If you want that flexibility, the Pixel 10 is objectively better.

Battery and lifespan

Surprisingly, the Pixel 10a actually has the larger battery at 5,100 mAh compared to the Pixel 10’s 4,970 mAh. The longevity difference is negligible, likely owed to the marginal efficiency gains that the Tensor G5 affords the Pixel 10.

Arguably, the weakest area of any Pixels, the lifespan is solid enough to keep most people content day-to-day. While the charging is another weak area, the wired charging speeds are still lower than the competition at around 30W – although this is lower in reality. Even the wireless charging speeds are similar, despite the Pixel 10’s Qi2 magnetic support. It tops out at 15W, while the Pixel 10a supports 10W wireless charging.

Final thoughts

About upgrading: 9to5Google often gives specific product recommendations. Sometimes, we may suggest not upgrading, due to various reasons including, but not limited to: increased device cost, negligible performance gains, or environmental impact. Whether to upgrade is always your call, but our aim is to help you make as informed a decision as possible.

The Pixel 10a is a strange beast. In effect, it’s the Pixel 9a with a new wrap, a Pixel 9a+ or 9a SE if you will.

This is the first time since the 6a launched with “flagship specs” at a lower price that most people should avoid and go for the Pixel 10 if you want the “best of Google” at a significant discount. We say that because the Pixel 10 has come down to match the Pixel 10a’s price in many regions.

At the MSRP, the Pixel 10a is still a tough sell when the Pixel 9a exists. It comes with last year’s chip, camera, and design. If you love the idea of the 10a and need a new phone, then it’s a no-brainer to go for the more mature and significantly cheaper model, as you miss out on very little, plus you don’t get ripped off.
