First they came after the murals. Now they’re giving Iryna Zarutska’s killer a pass.
DeCarlos Brown Jr., the brutal monster whose horrifying crime shocked the nation, is now being protected by a claim that he is “incapable to proceed” because he cannot understand the nature of the charges, can’t participate in his defense, or understand the proceedings.
Brown Jr. could understand perfectly well how to pick up a knife and murder a woman from behind. That comes after a criminal history going back twenty years.
If he could figure out how to commit all those crimes, then he can also figure out how to be responsible for them. The very concept of a ‘defense’ is in any case meaningless because the evidence of his crime is irrefutable. All that remains is to put him down for it.
And the same system that gave this monster pass after pass, leading to the horrifying murder, is now pulling out all the stops to avoid bringing him to trial and discussing why he was on the loose. So they’ll declare him crazy, send him to some mental hospital, and then when the shrinks have some overcrowding, they’ll spring him loose and the same cycle of violence will repeat itself again.
Fortunately, the Trump administration brought federal charges against Brown Jr. It must continue to pursue him no matter what injustices are allowed to occur at the local level in Charlotte.
