Fire Reported At Skyscraper In Downtown Manhattan Near St. Patrick’s Day Parade

The FDNY has reported that a fire has broken out at a skyscraper in downtown Manhattan.

The blaze occurred at a skyscraper that was near the route of the annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade.

The New York Post reported more on the fire:

A massive blaze broke out in a Manhattan skyscraper Tuesday morning — close to the start of New York City’s St Patrick’s Day Parade, authorities said.

First responders rushed to the building near East 43rd Street and Madison Ave. just before 10 a.m.

Huge plumes of black smoke could be seen billowing from the building’s rooftop as sirens billowed out, footage shared by the FDNY showed.

Other clips shared on social media captured flames spouting from the top of the high-rise.

The city’s official emergency notification system warned of traffic delays, road closures and mass transit disruptions as a result of the inferno.

ABC 7 New York provided an update on the current state of the blaze:

The wind-driven fire was under control within about an hour and a half and authorities said there is no impact to the parade.

Firefighters battled the blaze on the HVAC system of the roof.

The building is an office-to-residential conversion being renovated into 441 rental units, with 111 of them affordable housing.

The structure is largely vacant at the moment, with the exception of the 20,000-square-foot T-Squared Social venue operating on the ground level.

Officials said an EMS lieutenant and a police officer suffered minor injuries. All of the construction workers were accounted for.
