According to multiple mainstream news outlets, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has begun administering polygraph tests to its employees in a significant escalation of efforts to curb internal leaks.
The move, spearheaded by DHS Secretary Kristi Noem, aims to identify individuals leaking sensitive information about immigration enforcement operations, particularly those involving Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raids.
This development has sparked discussions about workplace trust, government transparency, and the effectiveness of such measures.
Yahoo News reported that DHS had initiated polygraph testing to determine who might be disclosing details about immigration operations to the media.
The report cited four sources familiar with the practice, noting that the so-called “lie detector” machines are being used to ask employees specific questions about leaking classified documents or sensitive law enforcement information related to ICE activities.
While the exact number of employees subjected to these tests remains unclear, the sources indicated that the initiative spans multiple agencies within DHS.
This follows an announcement from Secretary Noem on March 7, 2025, via a video posted on X, where she revealed that DHS had identified two individuals accused of leaking operational details.
“We have identified two leakers of information here at the Department of Homeland Security who have been telling individuals about our operations and putting law enforcement lives in jeopardy,” Noem stated, as quoted by The New York Post.
She added that these individuals would be referred to the Justice Department for felony prosecutions, though it remains uncertain whether their identification stemmed directly from polygraph results.
The polygraph initiative builds on earlier warnings from Noem.
According to Bloomberg Government, cited in a February 18, 2025, report, Noem had previously instructed DHS employees that all polygraph tests would include questions about “unauthorized communications with media and nonprofit organizations.”
This directive was part of a broader effort to address leaks that agency officials claim have undermined immigration raids, leading to lower arrest numbers than anticipated.
The Independent echoed this on March 8, noting that Noem and ICE Director Tom Homan have blamed these leaks for operational setbacks.
Fox News further highlighted Noem’s aggressive stance on March 7, reporting her promise to prosecute leakers to the fullest extent of the law.
A DHS spokesperson, Tricia McLaughlin, told the outlet that the identified leakers face felony charges carrying potential penalties of up to 10 years in federal prison. “We will find and root out all leakers,” McLaughlin emphasized, signaling a zero-tolerance policy.
