The House Republican leaders are proposing the 60-day CR.
The House GOP has proposed a 60-day continuing resolution funding bill to fully fund the Department of Homeland Security after the Senate early on Friday morning was able to hammer out a deal to fund DHS, but the Senate bill does not include funding for ICE and some funding for Customs and Border Patrol.
The House Republican leaders are proposing the 60-day CR, which would fully fund DHS, including ICE if passed, for the next two months—an indicator that House leadership is not likely to go with the Senate deal.
Rep. Chip Roy (R-TX) said that the House is “rejecting it out of hand” regarding the Senate version of the DHS funding.
DHS has been in partial shutdown for weeks as Democrats have refused to fully fund DHS, which impacts TSA as well as other agencies in the department. They have taken issue with funding for ICE as well as for CBP. Additionally, Democrats have been asking to pass a number of changes to impact policy for ICE, including that they cannot wear masks and that agents have to obtain judicial warrants instead of administrative warrants to detain and deport illegal immigrants.
The deal that was made in the Senate and passed did not have any of the demanded policy changes from the Democrats, but funding was not present for ICE and CBP only got partial funding in the deal. Even though the bill would have stopped the funding, both ICE and CBP have funding because of provisions that were passed in the One Big Beautiful Bill last year.
“It’s infuriating that the Democrats are willing to inflict pain on the American people simply so they can defund to fund the agency that is responsible literally for removing criminal illegal aliens!” House Speaker Mike Johnson said ahead of the proposed 60-day CR and after the Senate passed the deal.
