Bloodstained Director Shutaro Iida Passes Away at 52 as Sequel Production Enters Its Final Stages – Noisy Pixel

Developer ArtPlay, known for the action-metroidvania Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night, has announced that director Shutaro Iida has passed away from cancer at age 52. He was reported to have been afflicted with this ailment in October 2024.

You can view the studio’s full message via co-founder Koji Igarashi below, emphasizing Shutaro’s contributions toward the industry, including how vital he was to the upcoming Bloodstained sequel, Bloodstained: The Scarlet Engagement.

Work on that entry is now in its final stages, with Igarashi promising that the team will carry forward his legacy to ensure the title is worthy of Shutaro’s name and vision. Additionally, condolence visits, gifts, and floral tributes have all been declined.

SHUTARO has contributed significantly to the development of the gaming industry through the creation of numerous works. His passing is deeply regrettable, especially given the great promise of his future endeavors.

I express my deepest gratitude for the kindness of all of his fans during his lifetime and respectfully announce his passing.

The funeral was conducted only with close family members in accordance with the wishes of the bereaved family.

The development of Bloodstained: The Scarlet Engagement, which SHUTARO was leading, is now at its final stages. We will carry forward his legacy and strive with all our strength to complete this work worthy of his vision and name.
