Archaeologists in Mexico have uncovered an extraordinary 1,400-year-old human skull shaped like a cube, a discovery that challenges long-held assumptions about ancient cranial-modification practices in the region.
The skull was found at the archaeological site known as Balcón de Montezuma in Tamaulipas, an ancient settlement that was inhabited for well over a millennium. By around A.D. 400, the site had developed into a village of roughly 90 circular homes gathered around two main plazas.
Skull modification has been documented across many Mesoamerican cultures, most commonly involving cloth bindings in infancy that produced elongated, cone-shaped heads.
What sets this discovery apart is its geometry: the skull’s top was intentionally flattened to create a block-like, cube-shaped form, technically described by researchers as a parallelepiped. This shape had never been reported before in the region, making the find both unique and culturally significant.
To understand whether the individual had migrated from a region where this style of modification was practiced, scientists analyzed the chemical signatures in the man’s bones and teeth.
These results indicated that he was local to the area and had likely lived there his entire life. This means the cube-shaped modification was not the result of foreign influence, but rather a cultural practice that existed within this community.
The discovery has prompted researchers to reconsider the diversity of traditions among the ancient peoples of northern Huasteca.
