Feb. 4 (UPI) — An animal sanctuary in Ontario apologized after a resident emu escaped and took an “unscheduled run through town” in Almonte.

The Gagne Homestead and Rescue said in a Facebook post that Enzo the emu absconded from the sanctuary on Monday.

“We would like to offer a sincere apology to the community of Almonte for today’s unexpected excitement when Enzo the emu decided to go on an unscheduled run through town,” the post said. “While this was certainly not planned, we understand it caused concern and disruption, and for that we are truly sorry.”

The rescue joked that Enzo’s run through town on Groundhog Day was intended as a “public service announcement.”

“After careful observation of her shadow, Enzo has officially declared that there will be 6 more weeks of winter,” officials wrote.

The rescue thanked members of the public who helped wrangle Enzo and return her safely to her emu companion, Blue.

“Enzo is now home safe with Blue by her side, and additional precautions are in place to ensure there are no more surprise announcements in town,” the rescue said.
