Mexico has officially consented to deploy a contingent of 10,000 military personnel to fortify the U.S.-Mexico border, an arrangement made in exchange for a one-month postponement of the tariffs that President Donald Trump had previously threatened to impose.
This announcement was made by Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum via social media on Monday morning, just approximately 12 hours before the tariffs were scheduled to take effect.
In a phone call on that same day, Trump and Sheinbaum discussed enhanced collaborations to address urgent issues such as drug trafficking into the United States.
They concurrently agreed that the U.S. would intensify its measures to prevent the illegal flow of firearms into Mexico.
Sheinbaum also indicated that discussions between U.S. and Mexican officials were set to commence on broader trade and security matters, reflecting a commitment to cooperation.
Trump shared details of the agreement on Truth Social, describing his conversation with Sheinbaum as cordial and constructive.
“I just spoke with President Claudia Sheinbaum of Mexico. It was a very friendly conversation wherein she agreed to immediately supply 10,000 Mexican soldiers on the border separating Mexico and the United States.
These soldiers will be specifically tasked with curbing the influx of fentanyl and illegal migrants into our country,” Trump articulated in his post.
Moreover, he noted their mutual understanding to temporarily halt the anticipated tariffs for a period of one month.
During this time, high-level negotiations will be led by Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Secretary of Treasury Scott Bessent, and Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick, alongside top representatives from Mexico.
Trump expressed his eagerness to engage in these negotiations with President Sheinbaum as both nations strive to forge a beneficial ‘deal’ to enhance their bilateral relationship.
