‘Good Luck with That’ – The Outer Worlds 2 $80 Price Has Gone Down Horribly with PS5 Players – Push Square

There’s been an overwhelmingly negative reaction to the news that The Outer Worlds 2 will be priced at $80 / £70 when it launches on PS5 this October.

Following on from a solid showing at the Xbox Games Showcase, Obsidian’s upcoming RPG was confirmed to be one of Microsoft’s first forays into the realm of $80 releases, with the game’s Steam page listing the dreaded pre-order price.

For many — including ourselves — the immediate response was disbelief. Although Microsoft had previously stated its intentions to raise retail prices, we never thought The Outer Worlds 2 would be the title used to try and push this additional expense.

The Outer Worlds is a good game with a solid role-playing core — and everything we’ve seen of this sequel looks set to be an improvement. But with all due respect to Obsidian and its sci-fi property, The Outer Worlds is not the kind of project that most people picture when they think of mega-budget, AAA gaming.

Indeed, it’s bad enough when Sony and Nintendo are attaching $80 price tags to their first-party bangers; so asking for what is currently the maximum price of a retail release for The Outer Worlds 2 seems insane — at least from the outside looking in.

Again, the overall reaction to the confirmation has been beyond damning. Across Reddit, social media, and comments sections like the ones here on Push Square, it’s been brutal.

We ran a public poll when the news broke on Sunday evening, and the results speak for themselves. A whopping 53% of over 1,000 voters said there’s simply “no way” they’d pay $80 for The Outer Worlds 2. Another 35% told us they weren’t planning on buying it anyway. Ouch.

Meanwhile, only 12% of voters said they’re still really looking forward to the game, despite the price tag.

So, it’s fair to say that PS5 players ain’t happy about the situation — but does that mean Xbox is betting everything on Game Pass when it comes to The Outer Worlds 2?

We’ve seen plenty of people suggest that the price point is a direct attempt at trying to push potential buyers towards subscribing to Game Pass instead, but with how much success the Team in Green has been having with its recent PS5 ports, we struggle to see the worth of such a strategy.
