Disney’s Marvel Money Machine is Failing

Forget Disney’s Show White. Even Disney never had any confidence in it, but Marvel, the company’s great IP money machine, is failing. Captain America: Brave New World barely managed to crawl to the $200 million mark domestically and Thunderbolts bombed with a $76 million domestic opening. (That might not be a bomb for some movies, but for Disney Marvel franchise movies it is. And the mid-week news has been getting worse.

The only Marvel movie left this summer is Fantastic Four and if that underperforms, the Marvel machine is officially broken. For now the entertainment press is trying to pretend that a $76 million debut for a Marvel movie isn’t a disaster. And Disney+ is still making money, but the writing is on the wall.

Between Snow White and Marvel’s failures, Disney’s projects are struggling at the box office. Woke really does go broke.
